If you were to, say, buy a brand new refrigerator because your old one stopped working, would you clean the new refrigerator after the delivery guys hooked it up? Imagine it is nice and shiny and sparkly and there has never been food in it before. Would you take the time to clean it out first? Because my husband and I disagree about what the correct course of action would be. Please, help us decide who is right and who is wrong. I’m trusting you all to make the correct decision.

HELL YES! For the same exact reason I never ever ever ever wear brand new clothes without washing them first. Most of the stuff we buy gets shipped in from overseas and is treated with chemicals to prevent moisture from causing mildew and to detere insects and vermin.
New frige smell and new car smell are not one in the same to me. I always wash out my new appliances with vinegar and baking soda before using them. I could just be OCD about this stuff, but that’s just me.

Uh…I have to go with cleaning it first. I’m guessing that is not the answer you want though!

Okay, I have to say, I wouldn’t. Unless it looked visibly dirty or dusty, I’d start sticking food in there right away. I mean, it’s not like you lay your lunchmeat right there on the bare shelves. Who cares.
I’m guessing everybody else is going to point and laugh at my filth. Just being honest.

Now I’m going to sit and stress… wondering if I picked the right answer.
Let me instead tell you what would happen in MY house. I would be so damn excited for a new fridge, I’d immediately start putting stuff away.
My husband would walk in halfway through my process, and ask “I sure as hell hope you cleaned that out first.”
Me (LYING THROUGH MY TEETH): Of course I did!
Meh– I totally wouldn’t clean it out.

Nope, I wouldn’t. But I would sit and stare at it for awhile knowing that it would be the first and last time the fridge would be THAT clean in my house.

I am in 100% agreement with Auds. Though resisting the urge to put it to use right away would be hard. You do have to wait for it to be cold anyway so might as well clean it!

Nope. Not happenin’. No chance.
Delivered. Plugged in. Tape and wrapping off. Manuals removed.
Food inserted.
Believe me … it’s going to be A LOT dirtier in 2 months that it is right now.

Did you see those guys who delivered the fridge? Did you see how they used their dirty hands to touch the dusty shelves and install them after they plugged it in? Yeah, I clean it. But, I’m also very neurotic.

That would be a hell yes for me, and I see us “hell yesers” are outnumbered.
It’s like buying new plastic tumblers and NOT washing them before you use them… GROSS!!! You have to give the new fridge a quick wipe down with a simple cleaner and that’s that.
However, the funny thing is, I’m also the same person who DOES NOT wash new clothes before wearing them, despite my upbringing of “new gear is dirty gear!!”. I’m just too lazy and the feeling of a brand new shirt or pants just feels awesome, before the washer and dryer fuck it all up.
Go figure out that enigma.

I wouldn’t. A brand new fridge is often cleaner than than the discarded old fridge going out.

I’d run it with no dishes in it - add a full soap thingy and a cup of vinegar.

Clean it. Because you never know who’s been in there, and God only knows what they were up to before that.
Yeek.

No way. It wouldn’t take more than 24 hours for one of those spills-that-only-Mom-can-see to happen, and I’d end up cleaning it then, anyway.

OK - I would say I was going to clean it. I would talk about cleaning it. I would tell people I cleaned it. But I wouldn’t clean it.

We just got a new fridge last September. Well, let’s just say cleaning it did not even cross my mind :). I just loaded the sucker up. Must things come from a dirty grocery store anyway. Who cleans juice jugs anyway? or yogurt containers?
